Anchor Effect - Chapter 7.1: WeChat Avatar

Hearing this, Ye Yuchen stared at Yu Xiu seriously for two seconds and asked uncertainly, "Did you do it on purpose?"

Yu Xiu tilted his head, his eyes were extremely clear: "What do you mean, on purpose?"

So, is this the acting of the best newcomer at the Golden Orchid Awards?

Truly remarkable.

"Don't tell me you didn't buy your way into the trending search?" Ye Yuchen said as he took out his phone.

At this time, someone in the dormitory suddenly asked, "Yu Xiu, who is it?"

Yu Xiu closed the door and took two steps forward: "What's trending?"

"School beauty, fairy boy." Ye Yuchen clicked on Weibo and attempted to show the phone to Yu Xiu, but Yu Xiu came over by himself and cast a shadow over the phone.

"I didn't buy it." Yu Xiu lowered his head, looking at Ye Yuchen's phone screen. "It was my manager."

The damp hair brushed against Ye Yuchen's forehead vaguely; he frowned and shifted in the opposite direction: "Your manager?"

"Yeah." Yu Xiu stepped back, "And also my mother."

Yu Xiu's expression and demeanor were very natural; it didn't seem like an act.

Ye Yuchen was leaning towards believing him, but he still muttered, "I find it hard to believe."

"My opinion doesn't really matter," Yu Xiu said as he walked toward the elevator. "Aren't you going to give me your speech as reference?"

"Ahem." Ye Yuchen cleared his throat awkwardly and switched his phone to the WeChat page. "Let's exchange WeChat."

Yu Xiu didn't have his phone with him, so he just gave his phone number. After Ye Yuchen sent a friend request, he followed Yu Xiu into the elevator.

"Which floor are you heading to?" Yu Xiu pressed the first floor button, where the laundry room was located.

"I don't live here," Ye Yuchen pressed the button for the first floor for himself.

"I remember the acting department also resides in this building," Yu Xiu said.

"I don't live here," Ye Yuchen didn't bother explaining that he lived in a better environment at home. But then he felt curious and asked, "Why didn't you study acting?"

Yu Xiu didn't answer right away. He hesitated for a couple of seconds, looking at the elevator display screen, and said, "I didn't want to be an actor."

Ye Yuchen wasn't surprised. "So you wanted to be a director?"

Yu Xiu shook his head. "Not that either."

Ye Yuchen was a bit puzzled. "Then why did you study directing?"

"I initially wanted to major in drama, film, television, and literature," Yu Xiu turned his head, looked at Ye Yuchen, and said, "I wanted to be a screenwriter."

"Drama, film, and television literature?" Ye Yuchen raised his eyebrows in surprise. "A screenwriter?"

"Yeah." Yu Xiu nodded. "Don't you think scriptwriters are amazing?"

Ye Yuchen looked at the Golden Orchid Award's Best Newcomer with disbelief. "...Are you serious?"

Yu Xiu didn't show any irritation either. He asked Ye Yuchen, "Do you really want to be an actor?"

Ye Yuchen had never had other ambitions. "Of course."

***

Looking back now, when Ye Yuchen was in his junior year, he firmly believed he would become an actor in the future.

He envisioned himself standing on the global stage, surrounded by spotlights and camera flashes, a name recognized by everyone.

Unfortunately, dreams don't always come true. Ye Yuchen's journey took a different turn—he wasn't celebrated as an actor, but rather found himself becoming the owner of a "homestay."

Ye Yuchen had long reconciled with this fact. Very few people manage to achieve their dreams; most ordinary folks encounter various setbacks and eventually shelve their aspirations.

Ye Yuchen was no exception; he, too, was just an ordinary person.

"Hiss, take it easy."

Zhan Yang's fingers pressed painfully on Ye Yuchen's lower back, causing him to furrow his brows.

Zhan Yang eased his grip a bit, although his expression remained less than pleased. "Didn't I tell you to avoid strenuous activities?"

"I didn't do anything strenuous," Ye Yuchen replied helplessly.

In reality, it was Yu Xiu who "persuaded" him to engage in physical activity. If it weren't for accidentally kicking Yu Xiu so hard that he was propelled a considerable distance, Ye Yuchen would never have known how strong his legs still were.

"Then why does your back hurt?" Zhan Yang reproached, "You're not treating my efforts with respect."

Among the staff at the villa, no one else would dare speak to Ye Yuchen this way. However, since Ye Yuchen knew he was at fault, he didn't mind. He simply said flatly, "Alright, I apologize. I won't do it again."

The young man's temper flared and faded quickly. Zhan Yang's anger dissipated as he resumed speaking to Ye Yuchen, "What were you doing last night?"

"Just playing chess," Ye Yuchen replied, lying lazily on the bed as he engaged in conversation with Zhan Yang, his eyes closed.

"Why would playing chess cause your back to hurt?" Zhan Yang inquired.

Ye Yuchen didn't respond this time.
